This is not exactly a post you read while eating, so go ahead and finish before diving in to this article. The house I grew up in (we lived there for about ten years) is a very old apartment, and is bug-ridden. Old houses tend to be pests-magnet. So unlike some of my cousins who scream their lungs out on the sight of a rat, I am actually quite calm when I see those pests. I’m afraid of spiders but not rats. Go figure. Anyways, having said that we’ve lived there for more than a decade, of course we had to do something about those dang creatures if we are to keep them from munching on our stuff and leaving their droppings behind.
Mom used to buy those paste or powder rodenticides because they were effective (albeit also toxic to humans). I’m pretty sure she doesn’t know how ultrasonic repellents work until a couple of months ago when it was introduced to them by their resident office peddler. She was enthusiastic about it when she went home here, says it only uses sound waves to repel rats from one’s home. She was always worried about us as young children accidentally being poisoned by the rodenticides she used to buy, so I guess it was a relief for her to know that if the need comes, there is a safer alternative.
Not to mention that since ultrasonic repellents drive out rats instead of killing them inside the house, there is no need for her to dispose of the remains of the rodent anymore. Since rodents are repelled by the sound that the device emits, they will have no choice but to stay away from the house. Plus it is very easy to use. She only has to remember to not put it near soft surfaces, as sound waves are absorbed by the device. Mom and I don’t live in the same house now, but our homes don’t have those pesky rats anymore. Anyways, I’m sure if we still did, mom would use a product like the Victor® Sonic PestChaser® PRO to get rid of those rats in their home.
It’s always good to know when you would need to take action. Signs of rodent infestation, like droppings, gnawing damage, small suspicious pathways or rub marks, that distinctive rat smell and sound, should alert you immediately that you have to do something about it. Keeping the house clean inside and out is a good start. House repair to make sure your home is rodent-proof is also advisable. How about you? How did you rodent proof your home? I’m sure you have stories (gross or otherwise) to tell, so feel free to share. Not for the weak of stomach, though. Hee hee.
