Masculinity And The Blue Pill

The drug sildenafil or sildenafil citrate, more popularly known as Viagra, is one of the most famous drugs worldwide. Everybody knows what it’s for, and it wouldn’t be such a hit if nobody uses it and it isn’t effective. But, despite those facts, you are not bound to come across many men who would dare admit that they buy Viagra to enhance their performance in bed (or wherever you are caught doing the deed), especially high-profile celebrities. Can you imagine anything more embarrassing for a man like Simon Cowell (who is the epitome of smug) to be offered money to admit that he is using Viagra on television? Well, not exactly admit, but being asked to be Viagra’s new face translate to almost the same thing.

There’s the whole issue of masculinity that is at stake, the main reason why for all the success of this little blue pill, not a lot of men are brave enough to come out and say, “I need help with my impotence.” Which was why I was surprised that Enrique Iglesias (that hunk of a demi-god) shamelessly admitted to using it. Paul McCartney and Jerry Springer, I wouldn’t be shocked to know. I mean those guys are nearing their seventies. But Enrique??? Anyway, I LOVE him all the more for that. Not many men can do that. Kudos to Anna Kournikova for snagging such a delicious and gutsy Spanish hunk.

So apparently, celebrities are not all they are made up to be. And it also seems that men in general still have a long way to go to overcome the fear of tainting their “macho” image. Well here’s the sad story. Impotence, like change, is inevitable. It comes with age, sillies. Much like a sagging body is to us women. So what do we do? Deal with it. C’est la vie.
